I saw Inception on Saturday night with my teacher friend/coworker F - and we both enjoyed ourselves immensely. The audience reaction at the ending - this sustained gasp - that was great. About the movie itself, I'm very glad I didn't read any reviews/posts/spoilers about it beforehand and just went in with no real expectations and just the barest memory of the trailer - Joseph Gordon Levitt defying gravity, Matrix style!

As I talked about it with [livejournal.com profile] sinonymity and [livejournal.com profile] kitsune714, what I enjoyed the most about Inception was that it weaved in and out of so many genres and tied them together (IMO) rather seamlessly - from a heist movie to a thriller, mystery with horror music cues, and a love story that is more than just about the romance between a man and a woman, but a world, a life built on a sense of family. And how the act of sleeping and dreaming - something simple, something we do every day - can make such an interesting and complex movie. Plus, it was entertaining as all hell.

I also appreciated that Nolan respected and expected the summer movie audience to come in with a sense of intelligent curiosity and to pick apart his movie and ask questions and theorize and just engage - so much of our popular media nowadays is very passive, escapist, watch the pretty explosions on screen and let your mind drift - which is not a terrible thing, but it feels like it's the default option when there is so much more out there.

It's not the best film in the world EVAR!%%@)@!#%, but it is a good one, with an enjoyable story and feel to it - and questions - so many questions.

ETA: best WTF moment came courtesy of the PV for Shinee's "Lucifer" appearing before the commercials/trailers before the film began. I was whispering to F -"Are any of them even legal to drive?"

I had wanted to cut and run off to Singapore to visit a friend, but due to the astronomic fare - 933,000 won for a roundtrip ticket, and that I send half of my paycheck home every month - it was bad timing and scheduling on my part, but maybe next time, [livejournal.com profile] fivethreerin? I'm planning on going to Japan for the winter hols!

Friday night, after staying after to clean up the classroom one last time (because apparently a week away will cause my classroom to fall into a vortex of grime and dust so one last sweep was required) and to push A off to his holidays with the gf (no, I literally pushed him out of the door), I went home and turned on my A/C and melted on my floor.

Then I stayed up until 2 or 3 video chatting with [livejournal.com profile] sinonymity which was sponsored by KT's super fast internet (I WILL NEVER GET TIRED OF THIS INTERNET SPEED. NEVER.) and my missing her and really, having a sustained conversation with someone in English at normal speed.

Saturday was all about getting a pair of flats, or really, a dressy pair of shoes to replace the two pairs of flats that I brought - both of them were on their last strides and were falling apart at the heel and sole. But as my speaking level of Korean is still nil (which I hope to address soon via classes), I was not very confident about going into a store and getting the right size for my feet. I wear a size 8, 8 1/2 at home, and that converts to 250/255 here in Korea. However, when I went to department stores, all the shoes I saw went up to 245 and that was it.

F graciously accompanied me on my shoe shopping quest, we went into the underground shopping malls (really, the subway stations) and I managed to get not only one pair of shoes, but three - a pair of black flats with cut out designs in the sides, a strappy pair of platform wedges (and the ajumma who owned the store was so funny and so accommodating about punching an extra hole in the strap so it would go around my larger than Korean average sized ankle) and then a red pair of platform slippers. So I'm set for the year in terms of dressy shoes, unless I see some really amazing ballet flats or something. We had tea/drinks at Lemon Table and then wandered around down town some more.

Then we saw Inception, came outside and discovered the entire world was raining, splashed our way to a fried chicken restaurant and had a very pleasant lunch/dinner waiting out the downpour. F invited me to go see the waterfalls with her and her boyfriend sometime this week, and when Chuseok rolls around, over to her grandmother's house. I'm really excited - spending a Korean holiday with a Korean family ~ that's the sort of thing you want to do when you're living abroad.

Sunday was pleasantly lazy - I stayed in mostly except for a convenient store run, which was just an excuse for me to buy a lot of ice cream popsicles, I finished watching Season 4 of the Golden Girls, watched Nowhere Boy, and then entertained myself with the bad programming on Korean television (Koizora was on again, and I decided to watch Kimora: Life in the Fast Lane instead).

Which brings me to Monday. I slept in until 8:30 (really, my body can't sleep in properly anymore, it's because even though I have curtains in my apartment, the sun still seeps through, waking me up naturally) and then loafed around until noon - then I went to school so they could have my bank account book for a reference (small annoying bs thing about Friday - I found out my phone had not been paid for 2 months, yes, this is going to be another post) and then took the bus to EMART so I could stock up on groceries and maybe buy myself a spaghetti fork/spoon.

Mission kind of accomplished - I got most of my groceries, but EMART didn't have any spaghetti fork/spoons in their cooking utensil department. Which means I'll have to go make the 40 minute trek to Homeplus later this week.

So basically I've been relaxing, watching good and terrible movies, trying to keep in touch with my near and dear ones without feeling horrendously awkward (seriously, video chat was cool and then I realized, I'm so accustomed to talking with/what I type, that actually speaking the words - I felt strange. And kind of fraudulent. And maybe just a little bit self conscious and socially awkward, but THAT'S ALWAYS. Under this thin veneer of awesome, is another layer of ....awesome, and then there is the girl who never left the library to go talk to PEOPLE.)
