Am going to sell off all of my Ouran High School Host Club manga - it was between that or Skip Beat! and...grudge Kyokos always win, no matter how much I find Haruhi adorable.

More resumes to send off ~

HAVE LAST VOLUME OF HER MAJESTY'S DOG IN HAND.

*DEVOURS*
bluelovesorange: (her majesty's dog)
Got my justmanga.com order today - besides volume 10 of Her Majesty's Dog, I also received:

Venus in love, volume 4: A collegiate tale of life and friendship and occasionally the boy loves boy who might love girl who doesn't know for sure she loves boy love triangle that arises from such surroundings

Hotel Africa volume 1 & 2. Because I've decided I really enjoy the manhwa artist's work and story lines in the other Tokyopop branded volumes I've bought - I like Fever, and I'm about to start reading her short story collection. Plus the names of her manwha -- Hotel Africa! It's not about Africa! Or Bono!

And because no new volume of Penguin Revolution has yet arrived, I'm starting Sakura Tsukuba's other work, Land of the blindfolded.

I also have four library books and Swann's Way to finish.

I already inhaled HMD 10 ...and 11. I need it.

eta: the first part of Ouran High School Host Club DVD with english dubbing/japanese subtitles is set to be released October 28. Amazon has it listed for around 50 dollars for the first 13 episodes, but I take it that's standard for anime?
bluelovesorange: (k to t)
My god. Meisa's single has taken up rent in my brain and WILL NOT LET GO. I can't say I'm complaining though. As electropoppy/fauxr&b goes, there are worse songs, you know? And this is a fun song.

A scan from That Volume of Kurosagi: the Manga, hereafter known as Kurosagi: Why the Drama and The Move Fail in Comparison, a million times over, KTHXBYE. )
bluelovesorange: (shotamao)
I saw Death Cab for Cutie/Rogue Wave last night with my friend Shar, and didn't get to bed until 1 a.m. I am now appropriately zombified - which just reminds me how old I've gotten - back in the day, I used to be able to stay up until 3 a.m., fall asleep for two hours, then get up again and attend a college lecture without any ill effects.

Which of course has come back to haunt me now.

Anyway: a mess of links/reports/fannish squee:

According to Amazon, there is going to be a lot of Mick Takeuchi glee coming out this year:

Bound Beauty, vol. 1 release date September 15 2008

A Wiseman Sleeps, vol. 2 release date June 15, 2008 (I'm getting this next week.)

Her Majesty's Dog, vol. 10 release date August 15, 2008

Her Majesty's Dog, vol. 11 release date November 15, 2008 *sniff* The last volume!

and Matsuri Hino (of Vampire Knight fame)

Wanted, vol. 1 release date September 2, 2008 I read a scanlation of this a while ago, and I'm thrilled to see it's licensed. Matsuri Hino does PIRATES!

Also, I went to Kinokuniya yesterday (just before coming home and realizing that OMG, Death Cab for Cutie was TONIGHT, or last night) and I bought volume 19 of Kurosagi: the Manga. This weekend I'm going to Yosemite, so scans will be late in coming, but yes - Kurosaki's birthday is February 14, which I thought was a bit rich. And I'm going to miss the release of Wanted and Wall-E. >__< Oh well. It'll do me good to get back to nature.

Courtesy of Unleash the Geek - witness the glory of the Hanadan premiere appearance here and here. Shun looks like all that time hanging out with Johnnies has finally taken it's inevitable toll: he looks like the missing member of a boyband, whereas Matsujun and Shota look like members of an 80s new wave outfit. Abe just looks like he's going to hit the bar running.

Mao looks pretty and summery, and also occasion appropriate. That's why she's the clever mastermind.

For [livejournal.com profile] calixa, what Shota Matsuda is up to, besides not being the other half of Erika Toda's OTP in the lukewarm Code Blue (or as D calls it, Dr. Heli and his perm of Doom)

getting married to Maki for Atsuhime! FINALLY. )

If you loved the tech boys in Get Smart, [livejournal.com profile] cynicalism, I'm looking at you - they have a spin off DVD of their very own, coming out July 1st.

And now I'm going to go re-read Howl's Moving Castle and stagger off to bed early.

:/

I will reply to comments/stories/bribes/feats of valour next week!

to be brief:

finished Eternal Sabbath. Need to write about it - it's very dark and twisted and on the whole I quite loved it. It's a morality tale. Had similar themes to Mars, but Eternal Sabbath has a bit more of an apocalyptic feel to it. Title possibly a tip off to that mood.

Must illustrate my WTF meter, especially the "movies that are so bad, they're awesome, or stuff that I've managed to talk myself into liking despite knowing beyond a doubt that my braincells are being flayed alive. I've acquired a nice little backlog of the wacky, the insane, and the terrible. Of course Koizora features in it. Yesterday at a Thai restaurant (this is actually immaterial, but I like setting things up) I actually blurted out, "THIS IS THE POWER OF MY LOVE," and then I could not stop laughing.

Footnote to lurkers and new people: I am admittedly, a very terrible person and I do not like what you like. But I like cupcakes!

Loved, loved the Venture Brothers season 3 premiere. Can't wait for the t-shirt.

also - apparently there's a rumor going around that Taiwan is going to be filming a live action adaptation of Skip!Beat with Ariel Lin and Jerry Yan. I am apprehensive, as I really adore the manga.

eta: SHE WAS ALMOST EATEN BY A COW.

Fact: it is raining right now in Southern California, and looks like it will rain through Memorial Day weekend. I think this is EXCELLENT. Because I was getting tired of the freak heatwaves.

Plus, I just got a huge box from RightStuf and I'm still not done with my order from JustManga.com so I have a looooot to keep me occupied this weekend.

List of Manga to read/re-read )

would you trust Yamapi to take your temperature and not jab you in the eye with the thermometer? Starting July.... )

[livejournal.com profile] kitsune714 and I watched Koizora with subs last night. I have to say, it's an experience that can not be summed up in mere words.

But I will try. "That is the power of my love."

Thank you, I'll be here all week.

Even though it is only Thursday tomorrow, I already feel like it's Friday. Or that it needs to be. :/

A post it post of "Remind me to talk about...."

  1. the most recent episode of Vampire Knight anime : specifically how I'm not sure they adapted the manga artwork style into a cohesive/consistent style for the anime and that it suffers for it. There's a flatness/generic shoujo quality that I don't associate with the manga.

  2. how even though I'm not a Yuu Watase fan at all, and really, live action adaptations of manga are always a hit or miss situation - I somehow ended up watching the first episode of Zettai Kareshi and found myself strangely charmed by it. At the very least, I certainly wouldn't mind having Hayami Mokomichi as my fake robot boyfriend. I might need to do a mini screencap review for it.

  3. Last Friends - and the concept of family, victimhood and contradictions - the easy generalizations and what I think the screenwriter is trying to say about modern social issues and how much I was reminded of The Fun Home and an episode of This American life about double lives and what it means to lie to people you supposedly love

  4. Maiko haaan! - an odd, very broad Japanese comedy about an ramen salaryman who's obsessed with geisha and the long suffering girlfriend who loves him despite him being a total and utter troll to her, and yet there's redemption, musical numbers, and people get stabbed with exacto knives. Good times, clearly.

  5. How I'm stuck half way through A Natural History of Love, yet I went and picked up Joe Hill's Heart Shaped Box purely on the basis that it is about a man who buys a ghost on an online auction site and his life goes to the proverbial handbasket. Also, I'll be playing on paperbackswap.com this weekend - unload some manga possibly, fill out my Terry Pratchett collection

  6. I need to spend quality time with my new Shin Han Touch markers. Because art supplies are ruinously expensive sometimes, and it's ridiculous that I haven't drawn in ..I don't know how many months.

  7. My list of favorite Asian actors - mostly jdrama oriented, as they're the majority of what I watched this past year. No JE actors are on this list, despite my adoration of one evil-sama, because I'm trying to think in terms of overall body of work. Maybe as a footnote or something.

bluelovesorange: (kisaragi)
I like to balance my culture with a nice steady dollop of pure cheese - I just got back from the Getty Villa in L.A., and now I'm going to curl up with my beloved Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, and then re-read all of Her Majesty's Dog. I also read The Fun Home while I was waiting for my ride to the Villa, and I got the same feeling I got after reading Craig Thompson's Blankets, disbelief that someone could make words and pictures work that way, and in tandem, and telling a story that is both unique to the individual and yet universal in feeling - love, hate, despair. And of course, creatively awed and jealous - it inspires.

But for now, I'm going to sit on my bed and watch Diego Luna's hips do that crazy thing. Fight the Power, you crazy kids! Shine on with your magic hips!
bluelovesorange: (her majesty's dog)
It just came to me in a flash of sakura-colored manga sparkles. If they ever did a live action version of Skip Beat!, Mikako Tabe would make a brilliant Kyoko.

Haruma Miura would be a good Sho - he can pull off that brash/dyed-hair punk boy look well (see:or rather, don't see the trite, so bad it's hilarious pure love sentimental teenweepie flick, Koizora. D fondly refers to it as emotional porn.)

Still deciding on who would make a good Ren and Kanae...

ETA: Saki Fukada for Kotonami Kanae

Where to start?

1. If it hasn't already inundated your FL/pierced your sphere of consciousness yet - the show that ate my soul/heart last summer, Hanazakari no Kimitachi E is getting a SP. Filming's already begun, no word on real plot or when it's going to air. I promise to be annoying underneath lj-cuts. Just. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. HANA KIMI, YOU NEVER LEFT ME.
2. It took me twothree days to finish downloading it all, but I now have Taitei no Ken in my possession. There are alien life forms, Abe Hiroshi truly utilizing all of his unique charisma (Abe Hiroshi is Abe Hiroshi. However, if you needed comparisons, I think of a Japanese Bruce Campbell/Hugh Laurie mashup.), albino ninja, AND Meisa Kuroki as a male samurai (I admit. This is pretty much why I sought it out. For the sheer WTF INSTANT CULT CLASSIC value). I am fully expecting it to be one of the best worst movies I'll see this year. I CANNOT WAIT.
3. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nomanymore, a sneak peek at the PV for Utada Hikaru's "Prisoner of Love," which is the theme song to Fuji's eagerly awaited Last Friends.
4. I got volume 8 of Her Majesty's Dog and the first volume of A Wise Man Sleeps in the mail today.
5. I'm downloading part one of Maki's Tokyo Daikushu. There is fire, flooding and head trauma. EXCELLENT.
bluelovesorange: (flower power)
.Media that arrived in the mail for me today (and stuff I bought):

DVDs:

Volume 1 of the Hanazakari no Kimitachi E DVD (episodes 1-6 are collected) and I'm watching the bonus disc and oh, it's like reliving summer all over again. They feature the press conference where they introduce the cast, and there's this funny Engrish voice over. The individual photoshoot behind the cast photo is made of SO MUCH WIN. Shun. Licking his lips. Smiling. SHUN. ILU.

I'm going to curl up with it this weekend, and finish watching my Flight of the Conchords DVD set too. I also bought Dangermouse: the Complete Seasons 1&2 with a 40% coupon I got from Borders.

Novels:

The Teahouse Fire - Ellis Avery

I'm going to start this after I finish reading Matthew Pearl's The Dante Club, and my two PG Wodehouse novels

Manga: (yeah, I read a lot of shojo. For research purposes.)

The Other Side of the Mirror: volume 1 - Jo Chen

I <3 Jo Chen's artwork so much, so I was excited to find out that Tokyopop translated her original two shot manga from Chinese.

Miki Falls: Autumn, Winter, volumes 3 and 4 in the Miki Falls quartet - Mark Crilley
Yurara: volume 4 - Chika Shiomi
Kitchen Princess: volume 5 - Natsumi Ando. Yes, I like it for the recipes. Shut up.
Venus in Love: volume 2 - Yuki Nakaji
Skip Beat: volume 11 - Yoshiki Nakamura
Beauty Pop: volume 7 - Kiyoko Arai.

I have to finish the rest of the Kougra Ninja Scrolls (adapted from the source material that Shinobi's based on), and I'm going to check out Fuyumi Soryo's Eternal Sabbath (or ES) once volume 8 (the last one) is released by Del Rey.
bluelovesorange: (shotamao)
I went to Kinokuniya tonight with a friend, and brought home quite a haul (manga, magazines, pencil board, calligraphy pen). My friend also let me borrow two issues of Pinky magazine (I wanted to thumb through it for hair style suggestions) and I saw quite a few pages that beg for scanning - oh Yamamoto Yusuke, you are stealth gorgeous. I foresee the rest of the weekend scanning images among other things - I also stopped by Dick Blick's, and went on a window shopping spree. There's an H&M in old town Pasadena, along with Famima's, which means I never have to go to Santa Monica again....well, except for the beach.

Maki Horikita )

Kurosagi: the Manga, and Kurosaki/Tsurara )
bluelovesorange: (rain kiss)
I ordered 5 volumes of manga from justmanga.com on Saturday and I received them today. Free shipping, and I found out that the shipping center/distribution center is actually in the city next to the one I live in, so if I ordered it during the week, it's possible I could get it the next day next time.

What did I get?

Volume 7 of Her Majesty's Dog (I've decided to recast this using Ikuta Toma as Hyoue and Kuroki Meisa as Amane in my imaginary manga theater), Volume 3 of Vampire Knight, Volume 4 of Land of Silver Rain, and Volumes 1-2 of Yurara. I try not to buy manga unless I really really can see myself re-reading it later on, so that way I cut down on shoujo fatigue, and also regain some much needed shelf space. I'll probably join mangatakeout at a later date so I can rent the titles I like, but don't need to buy.
bluelovesorange: (NANA crimson)
I was googling for scanlations of Skip Beat (I had read them before, but it was a while ago, and I wanted to refresh my memory) and via google, I found this incredible manga/comic oriented LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shaenon. She profiled Skip Beat! in one of her Overlooked Manga posts and what can I say? I fell in love all over again. I especially loved her write up on Sexy Voice and Robo (and jdrama fans, the live action adaptation was done by the crew who did Nobuta Wo Produce, so if you liked/loved Nobuta, you may love Sexy Voice & Robo. I know I have a verging on religious obsession with Hanazakari no Kimitachi e, but my heart lies in the offbeat and quirky, not necessarily school drama/love romance drama/illness in winter THANKS A LOT, KDRAMA) but Sexy Voice and Robo was a gem in the otherwise meh spring season.

And I also learned a new thing today, that Yamada Taro Monogatari's mangaka is none other than Ai Morinaga. DUDE. How did I miss this? I loved her Your and My Secret (ADV MANGA SUCKS LIKE CPM MEDIA SUCKS. How dare you taunt me with cool manga and then DROP IT. Yeah, yeah, lack of funding, bad budgeting. Bitter.) and even though I never got into Duck Prince, I loved the artwork. Her art style is probably one of my favorites in shoujo manga, and about a month ago, we got in Del Rey's translation of My Heavenly Hockey Club by Ai. I need to make a later post about my favorite artwork in manga-land, but she's definitely in the top 5.

I'm still not going to watch the drama though - I only have room for one wacky hijinks/unintentionally slashy but probably not/high school mad caper romp, and frankly, I'd rather watch all of Arashi on their game shows than just Nino and Sho cosplaying it up.

(But I love you best, Matsujun!)
bluelovesorange: (pimpin')
Yeah, I'm fresh out of quips for subject headers.

I found some new titles today, and picked up volumes in series I'm still reading. I really do hope that Aurora Publishing finds success here, as much as I do dig the shoujo, I am getting a little tired of all the high-school (or MIDDLE SCHOOL) stories. Though the best stuff transcends the 'juvenile' setting and emotions are pretty universal, no matter what age you are.

I read Viz' official translation of Hana Kimi, volume 19 (the jdrama has made me re-try the manga and now I'm enjoying it more) while I was on my break - I'm a little sad that there's no way the drama can cram in all the excess characters (Nakatsu's mom! Oscar's little brother and sister!, Kayashima's rival aura seeker and his FERRETS OF DOOM.) but thanks to Helen's translations on her excellent blog, at least Spoiler for future episode of Hanazakari no kimitachi e )

I bought the first two volumes of Go-Go Heaven, a series I first saw while I was in NY a few months back, from DC's CMX line, which is terribly underrated. I'm reading Penguin Revolution and Oyayubihme Infinity from them.

On the list to buy at a later date:

SHOJOBEAT

Volumes 4,5 of Crimson Hero - my one and only sports manga, Volume 3 of La Cordo d' Oro, and Volume 6 of Skip Beat! I have Volume 7, and I can't wait for #8. I also need to catch up on Godchild, because I finally read the 3 volumes I had, and it's surprisingly addictive. I initially purchased it because I love the mangaka's art (her previous work, Angel Sanctuary, I never got into. Possibly because I saw the scarring anime first.)

I also read volume 1 of Yurara, and I liked it well enough, but I'm not sure if I'd buy it. Maybe volume 2 will change my mind.

DEL REY

I bought volume 3 of Kitchen Princess (I'm a sucker for the recipes), and I've read 1-8 of Ghost Hunters, but like Tokyopop's Kindaichi Files, it's good for one read and not much more. I should probably try Nodame Cantabile, but I'm just so happy with the drama, I don't feel like I need to. I need to finish Basilisk though, it's only 5 volumes and I'm behind on my ninjas! I think I might shelve AIR GEAR though, I have 1-3 and I haven't even read #3.

TOKYOPOP

I started with them, and now it seems like I hardly read any of their titles - I stopped reading Fruits Basket, but I'm keeping up with the Queen's Knight. They're publishing more Korean titles though, which is good, I wonder who'll pick up the void ICE KUNION left, or if their licenses will transfer to another publisher (I must have my CHOCOLAT fix!).

I did notice Missing though, and it's a definite maybe.

Go!Comi

I want the next volume of Her Majesty's Dog, please, thanks.

So, my love for (drama) Hana Kimi is so all encompassing and geeky, it makes me do things like this )

Also, HELLO to all the lurkers, old and new - I just recently checked my profile and....hey, some people I didn't stalk automatically pick up a life changing connection to, have friended me.

Introduce yourselves! How did you find my LJ? Curiouser and curiouser, said Alice.

OH, AND I TOTALLY WANT THIS.
