FOOD + SAFF = MOST GLORIOUS OTP THAT EVER GLORIED, YEAH
in other things: I watched all of Misfits, and after some random rewatching last night along with Green Wing - Nathan is the writerly baby of what you get if Sue White and Guy Secretan had a baby from all the hate sex. Seriously. The hair, the eyebrows, the hilarious inappropriateness, the annoying factor.
Robert Sheehan on his own looks like the bastard lovechild of Shia LeBouef, James Franco, and Cillian Murphy, and possibly a Jonas Brother. This is not a bad thing though.
He definitely had all the funniest lines, but he took so much away from the rest of the cast and the storylines (I preferred Season 1 over Season 2, definitely). It was an ensemble show, after all.
Simon still looks like a serial killer in training to me, but well done to the actor for bringing that kind of intensity to it. When he's being himself and Welsh - oh my god the hotness.
I will say episode 3 of series 2 - the way both Simon and Nathan were drawn and performed in that episode? Brilliant. I can't recall laughing that hard at scripted television in a while.
and the blasphemous reboot of Hanazakari no Kimitachi e's first episode FAILED to bring in the so called built in fanbase of the lead, so perhaps they and the rest of Japan realized...we've seen this show already, AND IT WAS BETTER THE FIRST TIME. OH SNAP.
(continue to FAIL, SHOW.)
I fixed everything and got internet/wifi back up a few days ago and then immediately went into a frenzy of downloading and flailing over silly things to get the taste of failed social skills out of my mouth - it's funny (or not) that I've lived in other countries without access to the internet for a long time, but one week in America and I'm climbing the walls.
I think this means social life/I need to work on that. But the internet is important! How else will I download Korean TV and check obsessively on the status of my official documents to go back to Korea?
Speaking of which - the FBI finally came through on my background check, so now I just need to do some more paperchasing - I need apostilles on my BG check and my diploma. Then I can finally present myself as a prepared candidate, then I get a job, and then I disappear for another year.
And it will be the best damn year ever, because it has to be - to make up for the first year of mostly awful things.

lauds & the greatness of tumblr (I'm nextstopbliss on that - feel free to follow me, Russian porn bots are doing so!)
I will admit that my ovaries did wake up briefly during the entire video but then promptly went straight back to sleep after it ended. I really yearn to have a cat, but not a human being. (my priorities - A+++)
( I missed your heart )
mistakency I GOT YOUR MIX CD AND I LOVE IT (like two weeks ago). Expect a reply!
and I've been sucked into the WTFAWESOME of City Hunter and hopefully by the time 4th of July is over,
smithereen will be too.

OH MY GOD WHAT.
Nov. 29th, 2010 11:21 pmI'm really into Secret Garden at the moment, as Hyun Bin & Ha Ji Won have the kind of chemistry that sets beds on fire (just ask Billy Joel) but Mary Stayed Out All Night's charm is still strong.
Just finished watching episode six - and
darkeyedwolf I'm sad you're not in Korea with me, because I think there would have been fist bumping and shrieking.
And I'm not sure but I think I may be on Team Darcy Robot.
WHAT YOU KNOW HE IS. I would chase after his bus, if he deigned to take public transportation.
As for Secret Garden: I love Ha Ji Won so much, but I think the character of Oscar as portrayed by Yoon Sang Hyun is GENIUS. He's what I imagine Kimura Takuya to be like, only funnier.
So end of Episode 6: OMG WHAT and then the preview for tomorrow. WHY IS IT NOT TUESDAY NIGHT YET?
ETA: SPOILER FOR EPISODE 6 in that hyperlink - and if it's removed by tomorrow, I have DOWNLOADED THE VIDEO.

I found the two months worth of pictures that I thought I'd accidentally deleted - they were on my netbook instead of my port. harddrive, and after looking through the pictures - I think it was the memory of what I thought had lost that was more dear to me than the actual pictures. The photographs are all ordinary snapshots - what I ate, my new (well, worn in now) blue chucks, the housewarming/Congratulations! You've survived 4 months and haven't had a total nervous breakdown cake, and mostly always of places and things. I don't take a lot of photographs of people and it's not that I'm a self-hating hermit who wanders out from her cave to send the occasional postcard - well, not always.
It always happens, I have these long rambling travelogues planned out and then when I have free time, I end up eating ice cream and watching youtube videos. When I'm away from the children, and on my free time, my life here in South Korea is not that dissimilar from how I was living in California. Which is....not bad, but not exactly great, I think. I left because I wanted to go on adventures, to change, to learn - and while I've learned that my tolerance for bureaucratic bullshit is remarkably high if there's a language barrier involved, I don't know if I've really changed. I am always my worst critic however, so take this with a grain of salt.
( think smaller )

Feb. 15th, 2010 04:11 pmRight, that's it for me with Pasta. I tried. Episode 10 - I couldn't even finish watching. I think the actors Gong Hyo Jin and Lee Sun Gyun are enormously charismatic and personally appealing, but their characters and the wonky relationship dynamic bothers me to no end, and if it was any other OTP situation, the little cute moments I would be going "awwww" over endlessly. But the simpering "Chef," and the hot and the cold - as
kitsune714 would say, no mas.
Sorry, Phillip (Oh, so you're the ex-drummer of TRAX. Sorry your management company sucks!). Sorry Alex - I prefer you when you are yourself and Clazziquai-ing it up, instead of being shoved into the unfortunate Second Guy Box (where Hanazawa Rui fears to tread).

Feb. 7th, 2010 04:44 pmtokujo kabachi ep2 softsubs released.
Ep 4 of the kabachi gives us Maki as Misuzu infiltrating a hostess club, drunk Misuzu, Tamura's suspicions of Dai-sensei entrapped in compensated dating, more close ups of the 3,000 dollar wig, and the opening riff of "Young Folks" by Peter Bjorn & John as music cue repeatedly throughout the episode, so I'm taking that as a shout out to
sinonymity
I've consumed a lot of media in the past few days: I finally saw Zombieland and the omibus film New York I love you, caught up with episodes 5-7 of Pasta, watched the most recent episodes of Community and Leverage.
Zombieland was enjoyable, and I vaguely remember the guide it was based off when I was still working at Borders. Though my favorite zombie movie will still always be Shaun of the Dead. And I know it seems like I've been focused on race issues lately (what with the most obvious fail of Avatar: the Last Airbender, etc.) but it was a thought re: Zombieland, with the sheer amount of Chinese & Indian people on the globe, and then factor in vegetarians and vegans, it made no sense to me that the only people alive after the Zombie apocalypse would be quippy American Apparel attractive Caucasians. Of course, I could be missing something, (other than the obvious: thinking Deep Thoughts about effing Zombieland) but yeah. It was a fun movie for what it was.
New York I love you was a pretty movie, but disjointed terribly - I didn't feel any of the vignettes really flowed into the other very well (and oh wow, Hayden Christensen is a terrible actor. Terrible.) and while well intentioned, never really gave me a impression of a true New York. As a real character in the stories, not merely a backdrop to it - and a lot of the shots seemed rather generic, postcard cookie cutter New York, of the I ♥ NY variety and on tv sitcoms. They could have been filmed in any metropolitan city - with the exception of the short film featuring Julie Christie & Shia LeBouef, which seemed completely out of place with the 'modern' films of NY, almost dream like and a throwback to old mystery films. It kind of jarred with the rest of the films, but I definitely remembered it.
A few stand out performances/memorable moments - Anton Yelchin has never been so adorable, Maggie Q and Shu Qi's amazing face (I could look at her face all day - she's simply mesmerizing), Chris Cooper's Cantonese, the moment the light catches Natalie Portman's head, the Legend of Earthsea anime playing in the background of Orlando Bloom's film (helmed by Shunji Iwai, full of his trademarks) and the film about the elderly couple.
Community is clever but not annoying, snarky but not mean-spirited for the sake of subversion or cool. And it consistently spotlights a member of their ensemble cast and everyone gets to have an A story, often in surprising and unexpected ways. Plus, Troy and Abed's epic bromance for the ages: "They're just jealous." I'm so glad hulu.com streams it so I don't have to watch it on NBC.
Leverage is missing something, and it's not just the splendid Gina Bellman. While I really like the new character that Jeri Ryan plays, I feel like I'm missing the old adrenaline spark that Leverage used to bring. Maybe it's because when it's consistently good, just 'okay' episodes, while still better than most primetime television, falter when I remember just how great Leverage has been.
Pasta is going to require another post. Namely, I have my reservations (ha!) about Pasta, and why I can only still, after seven episodes (nearly at the half way mark) only like and not love the drama, though it's trying really hard to make me love it.

kitsune714: so, okay
kitsune714: the whole younger man ruffian thing?
calledinvain: and she got him to go back to high school?
kitsune714: is hot for about three weeks.
kitsune714: and then you realize.
kitsune714: UNEMPLOYED.
kitsune714: SHIFTLESS.
kitsune714: MOOCH.
calledinvain: you see. this is why we can't be kdrama heroines.
calledinvain: other than from the niggling fact that we are not korean.
kitsune714: that too
calledinvain: But we're also clearly the wrong kind of Asian womanhood.
calledinvain: seeing how this trope is trotted out AGAIN AND AGAIN in dramas aimed at us.
kitsune714: clearly.
calledinvain: "OOOOO, HE'S DAMAGED. ONLY MY LOVE CAN SAVE HIM NOW."
calledinvain: bullshit, lady
there's breathless escapist romance, and then there is just shitty writing.
or tragiporn, as
kitsune714 dubs it. The mix of overwrought melodrama meant to invoke some kind of emotional catharsis, mostly prevalent in kdrama and twdrama, that instead, when served up to a person such as I, invokes eye rolling and mocking. Sometimes I watch miseryporn just for the laughter it'll bring me, because nothing cheers me up more than a woman with a bad perm setting fire to her hated husband's house and then lying about it! It's the television equivalent to penny dreadfuls, I think. Because it's so addictive and so bad.

Oct. 15th, 2009 01:12 pmoh wait, this is actually good. YEAH I SAID IT.
Epik High, why you so FREAKING AWESOME?
I've watched half of episode 4 of You're Beautiful, and guys, I don't think I have the patience to go on watching for another 16 episodes (or watch, like a zombie outbreak, this becomes the new Boys Over Flowers in popularity and becomes the new fandom juggernaut, and it gets extended to 20+ eps.)
Because yes, it's cute (sometimes cotton candy sickeningly so), and it's shiny, and Smirky Guyliner is starting to show more emotions instead of just constipated looking irritation, and Stylist Noona is still my favorite female character, and blondie Jeremy (WTF?) is a lovable dimwit, but as a whole, this drama isn't gelling for me in terms of total enjoyment factor. There are parts of it that are very good, and the crack is all right, I suppose (but I'm more used to and fond of jdrama crack and I was brought up on wuxia so you know my crack standards are HIGH)and while I can see the plot points that the Hong Sisters are juggling, I'm not sure I'm invested in anyway (snarky or otherwise) to see the emotional payoff.
And also, this guy:

He's NEVER GOING TO GET THE GIRL.
Check out the requirements: He's kind, he listens, he bandages her wounds. He covers for her. He wears white. He drinks tea.
HE IS SO SCREWED OVER.
And sometimes, as irreverent and snarky and totally aware of the 'great escapism' of dramas and how they have little to no connect to real life, WHATSOEVER drama watcher I am, sometimes (all the time) I'd like the second, decent, no secret pain, just genuinely kind character to actually have a relationship with the girl he loves and she loves him back. In that way.
BECAUSE NICE BOYS ARE AWESOME. SERIOUS. WORD TO YOUR MOM.

dramabeans.com is recapping You're Beautiful, so I'm only going to recap the episodes as I see fit - for a particularly amusing scene or whatever. I'm content to watch them RAW and read the recaps, subtitles are not a must for me for this show. Also, I figure for lurkers, Java/Drama beans' interest and background with kdramas make her a more positive, informative source than me, a fairweather kdrama survivor and unrepentant snarkmeister. Jdramas are my favorite out of the asian dramaworld, after all, and whenever you have interest and passion in a subject, you're more inclined to parse things in a more thoughtful way, instead of gleefully taking things out of context. And then ms painting incriminating arrows. I'm just sayin'.
Though second ep of You're Beautiful: BALLS.
Third episode, I'll let you know if the entertainment value has worn off yet for me.
Oh Tokyo Dogs, I hope the epic bromance between Shun and Hiro will translate into something interesting to watch.

is because it combines one of my favorite bands (SUPERGRASS OMG!) with one of my favorite dramas, because really, this song is a PERFECT summation of Hanazakari no Kimitachi e. The likely lads, eh?
and as for this: I only watched Brilliant Legacy in patches, and fast forwarded through a lot of the crying and screaming, so...um, yeah, that was not a lot of show left over, despite the epic 28 episode order and just like I prefer Shuji/Mai in Buzzer Beat (THE ONLY REASON TO WATCH), Jun Se is my favorite part of BL (not that the cast wasn't spectacularly good at evoking the reactions they were meant to evoke, and the leads are great. It's just....LOOK AT HIS SAD FACE. AND HIS PRETTY EYES. Kdrama makes me shallower than a bucket of shallow, I tell you.)
( don't believe me about the crying and screaming? )

THERE IS A J-BAND CALLED DAZZLE VISION.
Oct. 9th, 2009 06:16 pmClearly I must find their music and listen to it immediately, because how many times have I said, oh I need some DAZZLE VISION in my life?
At least five, I think.
I've watched episode 2 of You're Beautiful, and I definitely think I'm going to need episode 3 before I can really go one way or another on recommending it as Watch or FLEE FOR THE HILLS, THERE ARE MORE WORTHIER WAYS TO WASTE YOUR TIME...or at least, feel less ashamed about!
I don't want to put anyone off necessarily, because it's not quite 'dumb as a box of hair' but there's got to be more than good natured bambi-eyed head tilting going on. Hijinks is a thin line to tread, and it can wear a viewer out pretty quickly, especially if one is looking for a better quality of crack.
At this point though, my favorite characters so far have to be Manager Shifty and grumpy Stylist Noona who will cut a bitch if you cross her.
Also, have the new trailer for Meisa's ASSAULT GIRLS, which is destined to be a b-list camp cult classic, because LOOK AT IT. THERE ARE GIANT SAND WORMS, but this ain't DUNE. Also, UNSPEAKABLY HOT.

You are....so beautiful to me
Oct. 7th, 2009 01:26 pmJust finished watching the first episode of You're Beautiful/ 미남이시네요 and while it is pleasantly predictable, it hasn't ventured down the path of You're Kidding Me, I may be Shojo-tolerant, but I'm not willfully STUPID - shojo fatigue yet. Yet. Early days still, but I'm willing to watch the next episode.
You're Beautiful is not the Korean version of Hanazakari no Kimitachi e, fyi, because there have been cross dressing shojo inspired tales prior to Ashiya and Izumi battling their hormones in a school setting, and there will be more following, because everyone loves it when a girl decides to dress up (un)convincingly as a boy and then has to deal with Feelings, and gender confusion. Instead, as D pointed out last night, You're Beautiful seems to be more like what would happen if 12th Night went on a drunken bender with MTV's Making the Band, and woke up in winglin.net territory - the classic girl dresses up as a boy, specifically impersonating her twin brother (how convenient), gets drafted into a dreamy idol band, and has to convince them and the rest of the world that she's actually her brother, while trying not to fall for the sullen yet strangely attractive lead singer, or the fetching guitarist, or the blonde and adorable drummer. And they have to fight their Feelings for her. It's a Mary Sue Choose your own Ikemen/꽃미남 fantasy epic with possible metafiction behind the scenes commentary on the workings of Korean Pop Music!
Eh, probably not on the last part, ie. meaningful commentary/satire. More like - have you ever imagined what it would be like if you were a part of the Hottest Pop Band in Korea, without any of the hard work, tears, indignities, sacrifices, and batshit crazy fangirls rifling through your garbage aspect of it.
You have? Great! Have some nuns!
( Yes, there are nuns in this )

I like a girl with a long jacket
Sep. 24th, 2009 11:37 amOr however that Cake song went. Remember cake? I do. I liked them back in the day. Browsing at Sanseido yesterday to take advantage of the double-stamp day, and when I was looking through CUT, there was an interview/photoshoot of Aoi Miyazaki, and she had an artfully messed version of the Louise Brooks bob, and I do believe my heart expanded three sizes. Oh girl crushing, how amusingly non-shockingly easy you are.
Also, clearly dating Koyuki agrees with Kenichi Matsuyama as he's never looked so attractive as he does lately. The suits, the tailoring, the nice haircut and believable scruff. Super hot, L!
Have a present for the Meisa fans (you're welcome) on my fl and beyond, will be busy with that this afternoon. Also must figure out how to win the lottery as I want to own all of Mika Ninagawa's photobooks. And possibly Cindy Sherman. I love portraiture.
Thanks to
nomanymore for the heads up on this gem: Apparently all kdrama has to do to flirt with my attention is to go out there for the gender bending, cross-dressing shoujo manga/manhwa angle and I'm their (not very) cheap date for the interim. But look at this sneak peek - there is SMIRKY GUYLINER (from do re mi fa so lo and baby and me and a bunch of historical kdramas that I never finished watching and that one movie Maki and Meisa did about the haunted cell phone!) some guy from a kpop band and some other guy! There is a cute girl with the generic let's make a beautiful cute girl look like a beautiful cute boy hair cut! SHE'S A NUN. SHE HAS A TWIN. OR DOES SHE.
There is vomiting in a woefully small planter! Slo-mo hugs of MEANINGFUL EMOTION AND FROZEN LOOKS OF SHOCK AND AWE, misunderstandings with crazy mean fangirls, ridiculous headgear, Oh Honey You're Wearing That?, probably bawdy physical humor and toilet jokes, improbably staged live performances with REAL instruments, the Sorry Sorry Dance, more v-neck shirts than you can shake an underweight model at, and best of all, I'm pretty sure I read this manga before.
Also, the deep philosophical thought of oh, I have an asymmetrical hair cut, my life is so hard.
I could not think of a better way to start off Rocktober, really.
REJOICE.
Of course, it could all go to suck in a handbasket ala boys over flowers, ala 'cat vomit' but it has Smirky Guyliner! Smirky never lets me down!

It's been brought to my attention that if one were to take a glance at my LJ cursorily, that one might assume I only watch terrible dramas. To that I say, and so?
There's so many different flavors of terrible, after all - there's so terrible it's kind of amazing and why I can't stop watching because I have to document it for the internets. There's terrible synopsis and then hey this show actually is much better than it sounds on paper in execution. There's Asano Taeko terrible. There's why does everyone watch this terrible and I'm not being contrary, no, seriously, IT'S TERRIBLE HAVE YOU ALL BEEN POSSESSED BY ALIENS WITH NO TASTE. There's the terrible cracky disappointment because crackiness did not sustain a credible level of enjoyable crackiness and has now meandered into tediousness terrible aka (WTF, KOISHITE AKUMA.)There's the why are my people's dramas so effing' bad because RAPE SHOULD NOT BE A STORYLINE, YES TAIWAN I'M LOOKING AT YOU terrible.
There's kdrama/country music terrible (I see you have cancer your dog got hit by a car you're sleeping with your half cousin who's your mom and hi I have gone blind because of this inconveniently placed jar of film developer), there's crazy madcap shenanigans terrible but emotionally fulfills you beyond the thinnest of plot because it makes you so, so, happy so it's not really terrible. There's cat vomit terrible. There's lower your expectations someone in JE is acting in it that hasn't really had a good record of acting or emoting or singing or dancing but they're in JE so fandom's panties are aflame terrible. And there is boring terrible.
I mean, terrible is subjective.
This however? Is not terrible.

( and we're back to terrible again )

quick before it goes 9/10/09
Sep. 9th, 2009 11:58 pmI watched Yunho's drama Heading to the Ground and ....wow. This is why no one from TVXQ's been in a 'real' drama before.
Bless him, he tries.
But CRAZY EYES.
I imagine Jaejoong and Micky would have a drinking game during this.
"Who wins? Yunho's unlucky in love yet bravely fighting on rookie soccer player, or Jaejoong's MAGIC POSTMAN?"
Oh TVXQ. Just sing, and sing pretty and forget to wear shirts from time to time. Okay? It's good to excel at that.
ETA: Maki is going to be in a drama SP with EVIL-SAMA. The JE embargo seems to be over. I am infinitely curious to see them as siblings (AND NO, NOT IN THAT WAY.)

Doesn't he look just like Yu Shirota? It's the nose, I think. The European nose.
The actor is French, and speaks Korean fluently, along with some English.
It is very very very hot here. And humid. Basically I've been standing in front of open windows trying vainly to feel a breeze or two, or the electric fan.
