All Derk's creatures, great and small...
Dec. 4th, 2002 07:17 pmRe-reading Dark Lord of Derkholm, and picked up The Homeward Bounders today:..
from Dark Lord of Derkholm:
In which we encounter carnivorous sheep
"Good," said Querida. "You aren't a fool, whatever else you are. Did you know those sheep eat meat? There's one over there munching a sparrow."
"They do," Derk admitted. "I got them a bit wrong somewhere."
It was only when Shona, in sheer fury, turned the carnivorous sheep among them that they moved. They ran, some of them with charming little white sheep attached to their legs or backsides and the rest shouting about monsters.
and Tolkien is a not so sacred Cow (TM):
They bowed deeply and filed out of the house. Old George began shooing the pigs out after them. Derk sat watching, feeling gray, the way elves made you feel when they left.
"Upstairs, Dad. Bed," said Lydda.
Derk was just getting up to obey Lydda when Callette stuck her large brown head in through the open window. "Why did we have six soppy men in a green haze out here just now?"
"I'm glad to see you got here," he [Derk] said to the dwarfs.
"Been here for days now," said the surly one, whose name was Galadriel. Derk had been wondering, ever since he discovered this, what Galadriel's parents had been thinking of.
Come on. You know you want to read Diana Wynne Jones. You want to. You want to find out about Friendly Cows, flying pigs, Mara the magnificent, the griffin brood of Elda, Kit, Don, Callette, Lydda and a 14 year old wizard in training named Blade.
