Ah, summer J-dramas. I always come back to you, no matter how long the flirtation with other media is.

First up, Arakawa picspam. I can't really explain it. The manga/anime is so weird and the characters - well it's got this space alien/outsider POV/crazy cosplay/bizarre children's television program vibe about it.

Short version: the heir to a company falls into debt to a odd girl who saves him from drowning. When he asks her what she wants as a reward, she tells him to come live with her underneath a bridge. HIJINKS ENSUE.

It's a very short drama - it's barely half an hour long, so you can zip through it pretty quickly. It's a delightfully deadpan/punny jewel of a show, and I only hope it gets even better. The world of Arakawa seems so fascinating to me already.

Oh, obviously - SPOILERS for the first episode of Arakawa after the cut
like the little mermaid on acid and what the cast of Original Hana Kimi have been up to )

Oh Japan. This isn't the first time Shun's been involved with a yaoi/BL
type venture either, and I'm sure Shirota's had his fair share.

But yes.

HISTORICAL BOY LOVE! (it's not just for the Greeks anymore.)

Sent to you by saffron via Google Reader: "Tenchijin" adapted as mobile
manga, boys-love style via Tokyograph on 5/10/09
The taiga drama "Tenchijin," which currently airs on Sunday nights on
NHK, is being turned into a manga for mobile phones. This is the second
time that a taiga drama has been adapted as a comic, after "Yoshitsune"
in 2005, but it will be the first distributed in digital form.

However, the manga will have a fairly different feel from the drama
series. With several good-looking actors in the show, including the
star Satoshi Tsumabuki, it was decided that the manga will have
a "boys-love" (BL) flavor, with the main character of Naoe Kanetsugu
(played by Tsumabuki in the drama) more closely resembling a boy from a
shoujo manga. The artist in charge is Kairi Shimotsuki, who has
previously done both BL titles and mainstream titles, including the
comic adaptation of the popular "Sengoku Basara" video game series.

The "Tenchijin" manga is being aimed at women in their teens and
twenties. Sony Digital Entertainment is handling production and
distribution, making installments available on the Zenryoku Shoten site
at a price of 50 yen per story (about 12-14 pages). Distribution will
begin on May 27.

There will be three arcs, each focusing on a different pairing with
Kanetsugu. The first deals with Uesugi Kagekatsu (Kazuki Kitamura in
the drama), while the subsequent two involve Ishida Mitsunari (Shun
Oguri) and Sanada Yukimura (Yu Shirota), respectively.

Based on the fan response, there is a possibility that the manga will
later be sold in book form.

Uchida Yuki (last seen as Kiyoka on Innocent Love, also for Welcome to the Quiet Room) was the impetus for Shun to start an acting career.

That is all kinds of hilarz.

....Contacts are kind of a bitch to wear, I've decided. I miss my glasses. Of course, the fact that it still takes me ten minutes to put them on may have have colored my feelings about the matter, but I just need more practice.

Feeling meh, have some pretty.

Man, after Atsuhime's amazing ratings, NHK really is going full
throttle with the all-star casting business. Shun and Shirota, together
again! And of course, we cannot forget Really Good Looking Guy from
Tokyo Drift.

Sent to you by saffron via Google Reader: More "Tenchijin" cast members
announced via Tokyograph on 9/8/08 NHK has revealed a few more cast
members for its 2009 taiga drama, "Tenchijin." Among the roles named
were Shun Oguri (as Ishida Mitsunari), Kyoko Fukada (as Yodo-Dono), Yu
Shirota (as Sanada Yukimura), and Yusuke Kamiji (as Kobayakawa
Hideaki). The previous cast announcement can be found here.

The show, which stars Satoshi Tsumabuki, starts in January.

Oguri Shun, your super rockstar status has ARRIVED.

Oh, to be in Japan, now.

Toho Cinemas announces "Shun Oguri Film Festival" via Tokyograph on 4/3/08

Yesterday I went to the first day of Anime Expo 2007.

Hana Kimi promotional round up - brand new pictures of Maki as Mizuki can be found over at d-addicts here. Cue inevitable, "OMG WHY IS SHE SO CUTE?" I've uploaded some screencaps of Maki, Shun doing their bit for the dog and pony show over at my HK scrapbook. Toma (Nakatsu) has been posting nice behind the scenes posts over at Tomapi Rant (google plz), and if you can sit through an hour or so of Maki and that guy from Nana (the slutty one, no, the other one) eating things, a video is up here.

A mv for the Taiwanese version of Hana Kimi here. I would like to state for the record, Wu Zun (or Chun)'s arms are what make this video for me. Tattoos! So not Sano! But who cares? ARMS.

In JUST THREE DAYS, the Japanese Hana Kimi will air, and then next week will be my golden week. If the internet connection gets fixed in time, that is. I'm at the library right now.

And because I'm at the library, and I don't want to abuse this public resource, I can't post my giant, the moment I knew that This Was Going to Be MY OTP post on Kurosagi, and why I love Kurosaki and Tsurara so much, illustrated with screencaps, and flailing!, but I uploaded the screencaps, at least. That scene. Frame by frame, practically.

Just think Margaret Atwood's poem "Variation on the Word Sleep," the usually awful Gwyneth Paltrow's being oddly sweet and endearing and tragic lines to Luke Wilson's character in The Royal Tennebaums about having to be secretly in love with each other all our lives (or something similar), and you know what? It doesn't have to be epic. It just is.

Maybe it's not just your lips that are vexing...maybe it's all of you!

so it's a post and run sort of thing:

I guess another preview was shown on Japanese television of Hana Kimi, and a wonderful fan screencapped two scenes of note.

1. Arms. Arms of Shun. HALF-NAKEDNESS.

2. The sleeping scene!

I screencapped and doodled commentary on the Hana Kimi CM that was leaked last night.

The crazy starts here.

Oguri Shun and Maki Horikita both worked on the tv version of Densha Otoko, but didn't have any scenes together. However a little digging around (thanks to the yamaki forums), unearthed this gem: http://www.tudou.com/programs/view.php?itemID=3687710

It's this weird little short revolving around two Yanki teenagers portrayed by Maki and Shun - and they're both male. Hopefully their hair in Hana-kimi will be miles better.

There's a confession of love, random violence, hilarious strutting and TERRIBLE HAIR.

I think Maki has the ability to pull off the girl dressing as a boy androgynous vibe - it really depends on how they style her hair - but Mizuki is always referred to as the cutest boy in the school, and the drawings are hardly butching her up (look out for part 2, where I do pic by pic comparison). If they can pull off something like this for Mizuki, I think it'll be a success.

Also, come on. Some of the biggest boy stars in J-entertainment land are only an operation away from actually being biological girls, and that's just for plumbing - their faces are pretty feminine. Androgyny is the new black!

*preemptive strike against any negative posts I'm sure to encounter in forums about "omg, they cast HER?"
