Seito Shokun (!) is a school drama centering around a determined, idealistic young teacher who has to cope with a class of strangely antagonistic children, an indifferent faculty, and an all powerful school board member who threatens to crush her individuality.
Sound familiar? While there are the classic signs of familiar school dramas past (Gokusen, GTO, Dragon Zakura), and like its predecessors, Seito Shokun is based on a manga (the sequel to another apparently very popular title), the presentation is different in that it treads a careful balance between realism and manga dramatics. It's less cartoony than Gokusen (which is what I'm going to use as my main point of reference as I haven't watched the complete series of GTO or Dragon Zakura) and the casting of the students helps in that the majority of them look like they're portraying their age group. No mass hair coloring, Yanki-style, JE boy band glamour, these kids look 'normal' with a few stand outs. The teacher played by Rina Uchiyama is also an instantly likeable character.
