down here in the coal mine.
So I've flipped the AZN popculture switch over to South Korea lately (no, not dramas. Films, music, photography, food? Oh yes.) because that's just how it usually happens with me, and I can still remember the very first Korean mv I was exposed to (this phrase is really apt, I feel) as linked to me by a friend who got it off of one of the blogs at the time. Slashdot, I think? This was quite a few years ago. And oh, it was the pinnacle of everything mainstream Korea has been associated with since - gorgeous visuals, a sad (nay, tragic) love story, and buckets full of RIDICULOUSLY MELODRAMATIC BATHOS. The sheer wtfery that was going on in that video (Oh he's a photographer! Oh they fall in love! OH NOES, THERE'S DEVELOPER ON A SHELF! AIIEEEEE, BLINDNESS BURNS.)
Part One (that's right, this is an EPIC tale)
"Timeless" is a Chinese-Korean collaboration on the song from American Idol. It features two members of the 13 memberclusterfuck boyband, Super Junior in the lead roles. Google them while waiting for the videos to load, go on, I'll wait.
Part Two
The singers: Jang Ri In (Chinese), Xiah Junsu (Korean) are part of the South Korean mega-agency SM entertainment. Junsu's day job is as adorable mofo in one of Asia's (not just Korea, but also Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, etc, etc.) most popular idol group, TVXQ.
Jang Ri In returns with I will/Lovers, another epic two parter
I actually love this set, because...CHINESE OPERA. But oh man. Han Kyung ALWAYS DIES.
"Not Happy" (google translated from the Hangul)
This one isn't even all that sad, it's just a break up song, but you guys, THE BEAR IS BIGGER THAN SHE IS. Epitome of ridiculous love token!
"Why did I fall in love with you?"
Okay, technically, this is a Japanese song, but it's sung by TVXQ (who are Korean) in their Japanese incarnation, Tohoshinki. And the mv isn't even all that ridiculous, but rather bittersweet and full of poignancy for anyone who's ever had unrequited/lost love.
Um, and okay, I also just really love this song.
and to continue in that Now for Something Completely different mode, here is a parody of an overwrought music video:
The Wonderguys parody Big Bang's Haru Haru video
Personally, I prefer it over Big Bang's.
also, if you haven't checked out MasaMixes and you like Asian pop music but in the remix/mashup style.....go. GO.
