Did you ever get the feeling that there was a post in the back of your mind, hovering like an anxious butterfly, and on the wings of it you'd written all your best thoughts, the ones you'd never share unless you were talking to your best friend - and (s)he could decipher all the blank spaces in between your words?

And instead of that, you drank from the bucket of shallow and decided that green and yellow socks were in fact, a valid fashion choice (if not on this plane of existence, somewhere else). I've been feeling that way about posting lately - even though it's my journal and I write primarily for myself, I sometimes feel that I'm not entertaining enough, I'm not intelligent enough for my readers (to presume I have readers).

So, as the dedicated follower of fashion I am - I'm cribbing from [livejournal.com profile] wisteria_ and [livejournal.com profile] saava lurker/unlurk/re-acquaintance survey/poll spirit.

Tell me how you really feel, I welcome it.

I realize that icons are a common gateway - but what's the staying power?

[Poll #154951]

Make that four questions about *this* LJ, and six questions about yourself.

5. What's your name, or alias, if you prefer.
6. What's your favorite thing about LJ, and your least favorite thing about LJ?
7. 10 spaces, yo. What the hell is up with that icon limit?
8. If you could be someone else...firstly, would you - secondly, who would you be?
9. Music is a part of my being. Everyone has their Elvis Costello, Leonard Cohen, Tori Amos, REM, the Beatles - I have all these but mostly I have Tom Mcrae. What author/musician/anyone changed your life or impacted it in some fashion - inspiring you to create (whether it's art, music, or writing)?
10. Do you have what it takes to be America's Next Top Supermodel?

I'm sorry, that was a FAKE question. You know, much like the 'news-conference/report' about Miss Spears' virginity and the apparent lack of it.

the Real Number Ten -

10. What's your sign, and do you believe this is accurate?

Took the poll, but since I knew you way before LJ it kinda didn't apply. :)

As for the rest...

5. Lara
6. Fave: Friends page makes it easy to keep up with friends. Least Fave: hell bitch has an LJ and can find me again.
7. I HATE the limit. I'd gladly pay more money to have like 50 icons. I'm an icon addict.
8. The Duchess of Dorset, except not now but about 60 years ago when she was young and a Mitford, because she's had a fascinating life living in the place I'd kill to live, Chatsworth, the most beautiful country house in England.
9. I'm sure lots of artists have had some influence on me, but none stand out. I've never heard a song and been inspired to write, or read a book etc, except for Mary Sueing myself into them. The person who probably most impacted my creative life is my best friend. 22 years ago we started writing together. I probably wouldn't be a Buffy fic writer today if I hadn't written silly smut stories with her.
10. Why would I want to?
11. Virgo, yes, except I'm not as neat as most.

I have an unhealthy addiction to polls, I think.

5. Voleuse

6. My favorite thing is definitely the people. My least favorite thing...probably the times it doesn't work.

7. The hell if I know. It's not enough, that's for sure.

8. I'd rather be me, but I wouldn't mind being Kate Bosworth for a day.

9. I can't think of a specific musician who changed my life, but I have an everlasting affection for Fiona Apple's "Criminal." Don't ask me why.

10. No. Er, Libra, and on some days I believe in its accuracy more than on others.

Orlando, that sexy bitch.

And the rest...

5. Niki

6. Favorite: the fusion of design, creativity and community. (Wow, how deep.) Least Favorite: The Entertaining Factor you were talking about. There seems to be two primary kinds of journals here: one is the pure I'm Cool/Funny/Entertaining journal and the other is the Real This Is My Life journal. The predicament seems to be that the former is obviously more popular but the latter is more sincere and real. Sometimes I find it hard to decide which to go with (but usually end up on the latter because I'm just plain not clever).

7. I hate limits but I guess it makes the ones you do have the best you can make. If people could have hundreds, they would seem far less special.

8. Probably; I'd be someone from a loaded family, that's who I'd be. I've found that there's nothing in my life (and economic class) that holds any particular charm anymore.

9. Tori when she came out and I was 12, Duncan Sheik after I graduated high school, Joni Mitchell when I lived in London with no direction to my life and Radiohead now that I'm alone in college.

10. Ah, my sign. I'm a Taurus. It is completely accurate: I'm stubborn, selfish and materialistic. But also down to earth, organized and concerned with security, comfort and home. And sex, of course (being ruled by Venus, Taureans are the sexiest sign, next to those Scorpio whores). You're not a Scorpio... are you...? ...Charming devils.

Alas....I am actually a Virgo.

Affectionately known in certain circles as the 'secretary' of the zodiac sign. However, in relation to the excellent James Spader/Maggie Gyllenhall movie "Secretary," all I can say is...PWOAR, baby, you know it.

And I agree with you on the LJ division - I try to be both..or actually, I don't try, it just sort of happens. Sometimes I am, and sometimes I'm not.

8. Maybe, it would be fun to try on somebody else's existence for a day. I'd probably want to be Angelina Jolie or Milla Jovovich.

Also, your code name shall now be Vixanne of the Lightbearing clan.

And if you could have seen this boy at the place I was - part of cirque d'mer, an acrobat on stilts, but he was so DAMN SEXY and moved like a cat. I was smitten. I don't know his name, but he'll forever be HOT!boy on stilts to me.

5. Tink. Tinkerlicious. Tinkerbunny. Tinkertoy. You also know my real name, which shall remain sekrit.

6. Favorite: seeing inside people's heads. Least favorite: seeing inside people's heads.

7. The icon limit is paltry. And I refuse to pay $100 for a permanent account just to get 15 spaces.

8. Would I be someone else ... huh. Yes. But not permanently. Just for long enough to know that I like being me and could I switch back now, please? I'd try out Jennifer Aniston's body for a week or two. Long enough to show Mr. Jennifer Aniston who his daddy is.

9.I have to be true to my romantic soul and leave a peach at the altar of Judith McNaught. She writes everything I want in a historical romance. Her hero is dark and brooding, her heroine is small but mighty and the least annoying of all romance heroines. It never fails, every time I read a book of hers, I finish the last page and think, "I want to do that." This is unlike most of the romances I read where I finish the last page and think, "Who publishes this tripe?"

10. You know it, baby. Me and Tyra are like THIS. :twines fingers together:

Real #10. I'm an Aquarius. This is very far from accurate except for maybe the mercurial moods. I think perhaps my rising sign may have been in Pisces because I'm much more of a dreamer and a romantic soul than any Aquarian I've ever met. Pisceans are sensitive while Aquarians are independent and floaty and hate being tied down. I know a couple of other Aquarians, and it always seemed to me that they fit their birth sign much better than I did. I'm a girl without a sign, yo.

6. What's your favorite thing about LJ, and your least favorite thing about LJ?

Meeting people like you, and the whole "popularity" kerfuffles with the friends list.

7. 10 spaces, yo. What the hell is up with that icon limit?

It is the reason for evil in the world.

8. If you could be someone else...firstly, would you - secondly, who would you be?

Possibly, and I'd have to choose through millions of my favorite characters: Cimorene, Eilonwy, Alanna, Meg Murry, Sabriel, Nita, and of course Buffy.

I would have to say Thom Yorke and his band of buggered. He has forever corrupted my musical tastes.

10. Do you have what it takes to be America's Next Top Supermodel?

No. To explain what I lack, in two words? Ginormous boobs.

the Real Number Ten -

6) Friends lists and friendsfriends lists, etc. All the people! Least: The sheer amount of dreck. All the stupid, stupid people!
7) Sadly, I need to update my icons, so I have no room to talk.
8) No, wouldn't be anybody else. Sometimes it seems interesting to be me, only male, so I can see how much gender-roles play into my life. But not forever. Cuz being a girl's not half bad.
9) Bah. Skipping question. My brain just went kaplooie.
10) Not by a long shot. I'm waaaay too short. I'd do better as a WB actress, except I don't think you can see enough of my ribs.

6. What's your favorite thing about LJ, and your least favorite thing about LJ?

Catching up with all my friends is my favourite thing. I find people's journals endlessly fascinating. My least favourite thing is my tendency to be overly emotional and/or stupid in my journal, only to realise six months later that people might have formed quite weird opinions of me.

7. 10 spaces, yo. What the hell is up with that icon limit?

What about the 3 icon limit for free users? Fuck LiveJournal to hell.

8. If you could be someone else...firstly, would you - secondly, who would you be?

Yes, because it's good to have different experiences, but I don't know who I'd want to be. Probably Amy Lee.

Emily Bronte. I haven't created anything because of her, because I just can't, but her writings have definitely changed my life.

10. Do you have what it takes to be America's Next Top Supermodel?

Of course

6. Most favorite - my friends. Really. Least favorite - not everyone has it.
7. If I could have it my way we'd have 20. I need an Oli icon. And a Jack Sparrow Icon. And a Hermione/Snape icon. Colin Farell, perhaps.
8. Meh. I'd rather be an upgraded version of myself, pretties, smarter, wealthier, smiller. Ya' know? Yeah, very mature.
9. Susan Ward/Clive Robertson made me write. Then I stopped writing and then came DA who made me write and make videos. It's really interesting how the ridiculed TV can be inspiring.
10. I'm told I have the eyes and the hair. Don't have the age, the legs or the butt. Wouldn't want to be a model anyway. But if they were looking for quirky types, I have naturally black eyes, the skin around the eyes, I mean. Takes lots of foundation to cover it up, usually it doesn't work. Apart from that my actual eyes have the weirdest colour. Green but not, yell but not, bit of brown and grey in the mix. In the US people ask me where I got these contacts. Heh.

Angie. Aaaangie. When will those clouds all disappear?

6. What's your favorite thing about LJ, and your least favorite thing about LJ?
People. For both questions. I love meeting new people, but I hate not having time to be friends with everyone cool I meet, and I hate hurting people's feelings if I just don't want to read their journal.

7. 10 spaces, yo. What the hell is up with that icon limit?
At least it's more than three.

8. If you could be someone else...firstly, would you - secondly, who would you be?
I don't know. About either part. I mean, I often say I *looked* like someone else. But in the end I don't think I'd want to give up my mind. Or my family.

Tori, Tori, Tori. I kind of tend to associate periods of my life with different Tori albums. Not necessarily at the times which they actually came out, but the times that I listened to them constantly.

And she's obviously impacted my icons! *g*

10. What's your sign, and do you believe this is accurate?

Leo. It sort of fits me. I definitely have an ego, but I am so NOT life of the party girl. I'm sit in the hallway and cry girl. Don't know which sign fits that.

6. good - knowing what my friends are up to; bad - it's way too easy to fritter away all the time I should spend writing
7. The icon limit is evil. But even if I had 20, I'd probably be talking about how it's not enough.
8. I'd like to try out being someone else temporarily. I'm not sure who. I would have said Kate, but young Kate... Mostly I'd want to be fictional characters I think. Somebody strong, and witty, and fabulous *g* Or if I were going to be noble I'd become George W. or Cheny or someone, so I could renounce the Republican party and reverse everything he's done and reveal the vast right-wing conspiracy. :)
9. This is a hard question because I think there are a lot of writers that have made me want to write. There's no one person that crystallized it; I just always knew this is what I would do. I'll say two things, both recent, both of which made me say to myself...this is exactly what I want to write. Jim Munroe when I read Flyboy Action Figure Comes With Gasmask and when I saw Bringing up Baby. In terms of music, I don't know about changed my life but if there's one band I can't imagine living without it's The Waterboys. I found them in 6th grade, and their music was there for me during the hard time when I was living out of the country. And I continue to love their new albums as they come out today.
10. Taurus. It's somewhat accurate I guess. I don't know all the characteristics. I can be stubborn. But I can also be really passive (and/or passive agressive) so I don't know how that fits in.

7. See, I'm all for making loads of icons, but then I tend to use the same three or four over and over and over, so more isn't really that exciting a proposition.

8. You know, I don't think I would. I kind of like being me. I wouldn't mind being me but a clothes size smaller. That'd be just great.

9. Um. I really don't know. I might have to go with Savage Garden, just because their music is what got me online in the first place and was the beginning of the long torturous path that led me here. I refuse to be embarrassed by this. That's some good pop music right there.

10. As I am distinctly British and not in the slightest bit American, I'd have to go with no.

If I had more, I'd never be able to use them all. Waaaaay better than three, though.

8. If you could be someone else...firstly, would you - secondly, who would you be?

Nicole Grey and Katherine Applegate showed me that it was possible to write about teenagers without it being soap operaesque and cheesy and unrealistic (see: Pascal, Francine). For that I am eternally grateful.

5. What's your name, or alias, if you prefer.
Deborah, but I go by 'Deb' & 'Deefy'

6. What's your favorite thing about LJ, and your least favorite thing about LJ?
I love keeping up on peoples' lives, but then I hate the expectations that develop around it - how if you don't comment a certain amount, people start getting suspicious (sometimes, instead of just assuming life in the world outside is getting in the way), or misread things and jump, or decide you hate them just because you unfriend them and are cleaning out your journal for other reasons. You can't communicate these things like you can in real life, and also... well, some of my lj-friends just aren't people I know. So I don't really care about my feelings, and I think it's weird when they act like I'm an old friend betraying them. It's strange to me, as I'm sure you could tell based on the length and content of my reply.

7. 10 spaces, yo. What the hell is up with that icon limit?
I now have three because I ditched my paid account. But for once I'm only using one, and I'm happy with that. (Before, I used to like the chance to cycle around... more even than having tons of spaces.)

8. If you could be someone else...firstly, would you - secondly, who would you be?
I don't think so. I like being me, even with the weird things. I'm the only person I know how to be. Otherwise, I might be Adam Busch, just so I could hang out with Eric a lot. Of course, then it would be disturbing because they probably wouldn't do the kinds of 'hanging out' I'd like to. And I wouldn't want to anyway. Heh.

9. What author/musician/anyone changed your life or impacted it in some fashion - inspiring you to create (whether it's art, music, or writing)?
Yes indeed, and I'm sure you can guess it even before I write it - Common Rotation. How they are life, and some of the songs they sing, made me realize that there was nothing preventing me from trying to do that myself, and that even if I wasn't that good, I'd make something... and that's what makes me happy. I don't know how I'd have realized this otherwise, that I love music so much and didn't have to just listen to it but could make it, too.

10. Do you have what it takes to be America's Next Top Supermodel?
Only if they're going based on superkeen intelligence.
*cough*

10. What's your sign, and do you believe this is accurate?
I'm a Scorpio, and I guess I'm tough, but not the way Scorpios are supposed to be. I'm firm in my convictions, sure, the few of them I have, but I believe in compromise, love and kindness. So I guess I just don't know. :)

5. What's your name, or alias, if you prefer.
There are some who call me...Diana.

6. What's your favorite thing about LJ, and your least favorite thing about LJ?
1)Having a place to go to for ranting, raving, and just sharing anything I want with other people who are kindred spirits.
2) The nuerotic friending ritual.

7. 10 spaces, yo. What the hell is up with that icon limit?
Proof that Buffy didn't stop every plan of The First's

8. If you could be someone else...firstly, would you - secondly, who would you be?
Only if it was a temporary thing. But if I could for a little bit I'd want to be a hot gay guy. Just for...researching purposes.

I'd have to say Tori Amos. Her music is so organic and varied. She is a true female musician among all the crap wannabes in the world today.

10. Do you have what it takes to be America's Next Top Supermodel?
I'm pretty sure I do since I am a famous model already.

10. What's your sign, and do you believe this is accurate?
Capricorn and I have no idea.

poll answers :)

5. My internet name is Juliet Law. I can’t remember if you know my real one.

6. My favorite thing about LJ is that it permits me to keep in touch with my friends daily. My least favorite is when it’s down and non-working.

7. I’m actually down to 3 -- haven’t re-bought myself a paid account yet.

8. I would, and I would like to be.. I have no idea. There’s too many people to chose from. LOL

9. My answer is going to disappoint you because I’m not very much into music. But right now, AC/DC’s "Stiff Upper Lip" is *the* CD because it reminds me of Duke, whom I think I’m developing a crush on. Thus I should stop playing that CD.

10.a. Absolutely not. And I guess you need to be American anyway.

10.b. Pisces. It’s accurate regarding the 'huge-dreamer/important-fantasy-life' part but not the 'liking water' part. And I never read horoscopes if you must know.

5. What's your name, or alias, if you prefer.
Nora, duh. Call me Norma and die. I'm absolutely serious about that.

6. What's your favorite thing about LJ, and your least favorite thing about LJ?
Favorite thing: fascinating people who form a wonderful community.
Least favorite thing: Junior. High.

7. 10 spaces, yo. What the hell is up with that icon limit?
Bandwidth, bandwidth, bandwidth. But, y'know, they've been working on a solution for months. PicPix, when will you be finished?

8. If you could be someone else...firstly, would you - secondly, who would you be?
Probably not. I kind of like me, and I'm used to my set of neuroses; it'd take to long to get used to someone else's brain.

Author: Louisa May Alcott (we've discussed this)
Musician: For some reason, Ella's the first person to leap to mind whenever I have a question like this. Not sure if she'd still come out on top if I gave it careful reflection, but I'm in a hurry so I'll go with the gut.
Anyone: My great-grandmother, who came to the U.S. on her own at age 15, taught herself English, kicked all kinds of ass, and was still self-sufficient enough to bake six pies for her own 90th birthday party.

10. Do you have what it takes to be America's Next Top Supermodel?
Absolutely not.

Oh, duh. Forgot that last one was a fake.

10. What's your sign, and do you believe this is accurate?
Aquarius, and yes. I'm about as aquarius as a person could be. It's frightening.

Just wanted to play nice and answer your questions :o).

5: Rikke. Stupid name. But people seem to like to use it....

6: Favorite thing: That this is place to rant. Incessantly. About stuff. I like to rant about stuff. And I like to read other people's quality rants. About stuff. -- Least favorite thing: That at least once a month someone gets inferiority issues regarding the Hell that is friending. I'm with whoever first suggested to call it a Reading List.

7: I knoooooow! These LJ-people are insane! Or insanely evil! [sobs] How will we ever survive? I'm so frustrated about this that I can't figure out to use the 10 measly spaces I do have!

8: Firstly: No. I like being me. With all the nut-job issues and regular break-downs of all kinds. Because if I lacked the bad parts of me, I might lack some of the really good parts too. Then I'd be even more boring than I already am! Scary thought :oP.

9: The writer that made a first impact on me was Tamora Pierce. She made me realize that, "Hey! I can do that too!" which I then did, and enjoyed. A lot. Later I've enjoyed more unknown authors that have helped me develope my own writing style. I simply have too much music that I love, but I admire Counting Crows for their amazing lyrics -- they inspire me greatly.

10. I'm Pisces. And even though the description of this sign is very accurate for me, I don't believe it at all. I think it's horrible that people let random horoscopes influence all kinds of decisions in their life. (Now I offended someone, that's just great!) I'm not "free of faith" though, I'm just Christian ;o).

As a last note I understand that you don't have the time/ interest to friend me back. I'm not offended at all, that's not what I expect when I friend people. I just wanna tell them I read their journal.

thank you for being upfront about it -

That's very cool of you - and with me, it's really a time issue, not so much the interests thing. I find most people ceaselessly interesting.

;)
